In this video, we’re taking a quick dive into different types of lens filters, covering some of the most useful ones for film and digital photography. I left out ND filters since I don’t use them much for photography (they essentially just reduce light), but we’ll go over some of the classic filters that can help you correct colors, enhance contrast, or get creative with your shots.
Common Lens Filters & Their Uses
📷 UV Filters – Originally designed to block ultraviolet light, but today they’re mostly used as lens protection.
📷 Polarizing Filters – Reduce reflections and glare, enhance blue skies, and increase contrast.
📷 Color Correction Filters – Help balance film stock to different lighting conditions (Tungsten/Daylight shifts).
📷 Special Effects Filters – Such as soft focus, diffusion, starburst, or color tint filters for creative shooting.
Color Correction Filters Explained
🔹 85B Filter – Used to shoot tungsten-balanced film in daylight without a heavy blue color shift.
🔹 80B Filter – Used to shoot daylight-balanced film under tungsten indoor lighting, correcting the yellow-orange cast.
🔹 Or… Just Leave Them Off! – Filters aren’t just for correction—you can also get creative and embrace the color shifts for unique looks.

Filters can be a useful tool for adjusting color, contrast, and reflections in your photography, whether you’re shooting film or digital. While some are purely functional for color correction, others can be used creatively to enhance your images.
