Building Games For Omarchy Quattro Is Stupidly Fun and Really Easy

The Omarchy Quattro plugin store hit 903 submissions in its first weekend. Everyone's building codecs, VPN tools, system utilities — brilliant stuff. But you know this channel. I went a different way. I've been building games as plugins, and in this video I show you what's possible when you combine QML, Claude for code, and ChatGPT for graphics.

BIG NEWS FIRST — THE OMACON FOUNDATION

Before the games, the news. The OmaCon Foundation has been created — a non-profit holding the trademarks and supporting the whole Omarchy ecosystem. Patrons include DHH, Jason Fried, Dell, Cloudflare, Jack Dorsey, and Toby from Shopify, each putting serious money in. They're sponsoring Vaxry so Hyprland development continues fully funded and open source. The core team has been announced. And there's a plugin competition running — submissions to the store by August 24th, three prizes. The news page on the Omarchy site is where to follow all of it.

THE GAMES

Quatroids — my Asteroids port, moved over from the Love2D versions I built ages ago. Hyperspace, level clearing, the lot. Press Escape and it vanishes — boss mode — come back and it's still playing. And because the agent uses Omarchy's built-in plugin skill, it themes itself to your desktop automatically.

Missile Command clone — with a CRT tube mode overlay for that proper arcade look. Pure QML in a window, installs from the store. The 2D vector stuff ports beautifully; 3D is QML's weak spot so Zaxxon and the vector tank games will have to wait.

Quattrolitaire — every serious OS needs a solitaire. Think of the hundreds of thousands of man-hours Windows lost to it. Mine is full Klondike with three-draw and the bouncing card finale. The twist: the entire deck was AI-generated. I briefed ChatGPT's image model to design performance-themed cards, and the prompt is on the repo — feed it your own brief and generate a deck of vegetables, flowers, whatever you like, then drop them in. The card backs use community AI wallpaper art.

Quattro GT — a proper pixel driving game. This is the workflow discovery: Claude is the code overlord but can't make graphics, so ChatGPT generates the sprite sheets and style cards with transparency, and Claude clips them out and codes the game. Four circuits, qualifying laps, jump starts, puddles, crashes, Omarchy-branded trackside banners, and the sun from the Voltatones wallpaper as the backdrop. Two controls — space for speed, arrows to steer.

And a preview of what's next — an isometric adventure in the style of Crusader: No Remorse, all AI-generated, still in progress.

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY LEARN

Building these with agents teaches you game mechanics without needing to learn the deep code first. Collision detection, sprite movement, how old arcade racers drew the road line by line towards you — you absorb all of it by directing the build. Then you can take it further.

BEYOND PLUGINS — APPS ARE NEXT

DHH has left us two blueprints: OmaCut (video trimmer) and OmaWrite (markdown editor), both proper C++ applications with a clear structure. Point your agent at those repos and you've got a template for building full applications, not just QML plugins. That's my next series — including an all-in-one DaVinci Resolve installer in QML covering Nvidia, AMD, and Intel Arc in a single tool. That video's coming shortly.

Also glimpsed: NoCoder updated as a full conversion app, and an AI image upscaler that's already on the plugin store.

All my games are on the official plugin store. Go build something daft.
