Camera Focus Part 1 – Understanding Autofocus Systems

Welcome to Part 1 of my series on camera focus systems! In this video, we’re diving into autofocus (AF)—how it works, the different types, and what you need to know to get the best results from your camera.

What is Autofocus & How Does It Work?

Autofocus systems are designed to automatically adjust your camera’s focus for sharp images. Depending on your camera, it may use one or a combination of different AF technologies:

📷 Contrast Detection AF – Used in mirrorless cameras and some DSLRs in live view, this system measures contrast to determine sharpness.
📷 Phase Detection AF – Found in DSLRs and advanced mirrorless cameras, this system splits light into two images and aligns them for fast and accurate focusing.
📷 Hybrid Autofocus – A combination of contrast detection and phase detection, providing fast and accurate focusing in different conditions.

Types of Autofocus Modes

🔹 Single AF (AF-S / One-Shot AF) – Best for still subjects, locks focus once you half-press the shutter.
🔹 Continuous AF (AF-C / AI Servo) – Ideal for moving subjects, continuously adjusts focus as long as the shutter is half-pressed.
🔹 Automatic AF (AF-A / AI Focus) – Switches between Single and Continuous AF depending on subject movement.
🔹 Manual Override AF – Some cameras allow fine-tuning autofocus manually, useful in low-light or tricky focusing situations.

Common Autofocus Issues & Solutions

❌ Hunting – When the camera struggles to lock focus, often in low contrast or low light.
✅ Solution: Use a focus-assist light, switch to manual focus, or aim for a high-contrast area.

❌ Back/Front Focus Issues – When the camera focuses slightly in front of or behind your subject.
✅ Solution: Calibrate your lenses (DSLRs) or use focus peaking (mirrorless) for manual adjustments.

❌ Slow Autofocus in Low Light
✅ Solution: Use a wider aperture lens, increase ISO, or switch to manual focus if needed.

Best Cameras for Autofocus Performance

📷 Canon Dual Pixel AF – One of the fastest and smoothest autofocus systems in mirrorless and DSLR cameras.
📷 Sony’s Real-Time Eye AF – Fantastic for portrait and action photography.
📷 Nikon’s 3D Tracking AF – Great for sports and wildlife photography.

Final Thoughts

Autofocus has come a long way, making it easier than ever to capture sharp, well-focused images. Whether you’re using contrast detection, phase detection, or hybrid AF, understanding how autofocus works will help you get better results in different shooting situations.
