Camera Focus Part 4 – Zone Focus & Distance Estimation

In this video, we’re diving into Zone Focusing—a powerful focusing technique that lets you shoot quickly and accurately without relying on autofocus or even looking through the viewfinder. This method is a favorite among street photographers, documentary shooters, and film photographers who need fast, precise focus in unpredictable situations.

What is Zone Focusing?

📷 Pre-Focus for Speed – Instead of adjusting focus for every shot, you set your focus based on distance and aperture in advance.
📷 Works Best with Manual Focus Lenses – Zone focusing is often used with older film cameras or manual lenses, especially those with depth-of-field markings.
📷 Great for Street Photography – No need to slow down—just frame and shoot while keeping subjects sharp.
📷 Uses Depth of Field to Your Advantage – A smaller aperture (higher f-stop) increases depth of field, keeping more of the scene in focus.

Understanding Distance Estimation

🔹 Practice Judging Distance – Being able to estimate distances accurately is key to mastering zone focusing.
🔹 Use Your Lens Markings – Many manual focus lenses have distance scales, showing how much of the scene will be in focus at different apertures.
🔹 The Wider the Lens, the Easier It Is – 28mm and 35mm lenses are great for zone focusing, since they have a naturally deeper depth of field.

Leica & Rangefinder Correction

🔹 Quick Note: In the video, I mentioned that Leica cameras don’t have shutters—what I meant is that they don’t have mirrors like SLRs. Leica rangefinders do have shutters!

Final Thoughts

Zone focusing is an invaluable skill for fast, accurate shooting in unpredictable conditions. Whether you’re using a classic film camera, a Leica rangefinder, or a manual lens on a mirrorless system, learning to estimate distances and use depth of field properly will help you nail your shots without hesitation.
