In this video, I take you through every step of installing Linux Mint on a 2018 Mac Mini with the Apple T2 Security Chip โ arguably one of the trickiest Macs to work with due to Appleโs tight hardware lockdowns. But donโt worry โ thanks to the amazing community over at T2Linux.org, thereโs a way to bring these machines back to life with Linux!
๐ง Why do this?
macOS updates (like Sequoia and soon Tahoe) are leaving Intel Macs behind. The 2018 Mac Mini โ especially the base model with an i3 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 128GB SSD โ is still solid hardware, but itโs increasingly unsupported. Instead of letting it sit idle, weโll convert it into a fast, stable, and fully featured Linux desktop.

๐ง Why Linux Mint?
I tried other distros like Ubuntu, Fedora, CachyOS and Pop!_OS โ and while some of them worked with tweaks, Linux Mint stood out for being:
โ User-friendly (especially for Mac and Windows users)
โ Lightweight and fast on older hardware
โ Actively maintained with great driver support
โ Compatible with Intelโs Quick Sync (hardware encoding)
โ A fantastic balance between polish and power

๐ฎ Gaming & Media Use Cases:
While this Mac Mini isnโt a gaming powerhouse, itโs still very capable:
โ OBS Studio runs with hardware-accelerated encoding (great for streaming or capture)
โ Steam works with Proton (I played Dredge at around 30โ36 FPS at 1080p)
โ Thunderbolt 3 eGPU support available for heavier graphics work
โ Perfect base for a Plex Media Server or home streaming box (Plex install coming soon!)
