The SteamOS desktop is fine. It's KDE Plasma, it works, and if you love Windows you'll feel right at home. I don't love Windows. So I've rebuilt the Steam desktop into something else entirely — OnMySteam version 2, a complete transformation that brings the Omarchy experience to SteamOS. Tiling windows, keyboard-driven workflow, a proper top bar, workspaces, and full Omarchy theme support.

This is a quantum leap over the first version I released, and it's on Git now.
THE QML DISCOVERY
Here's what made this possible. Omarchy 4 is coming — there's an alpha out — and DHH's team rewrote the entire shell in Quickshell and QML. One flat surface, panels launched on top, the way car interfaces are built. Going through the beta process taught me an enormous amount about good design and implementation.
Then I did some digging — KDE Plasma's fundamental underpinning is also QML. Same language. So everything I'd learned building for Omarchy 4 could transport straight across to the Steam desktop. That's what this is.
WHAT YOU GET
One command from Git, reboot, and Plasma is transformed. The bottom bar is gone. You get a clean top bar with system info, memory, a clipboard manager that catches everything you copy, monitor scaling controls, nightlight, Bluetooth, networks, audio, and a power menu with games mode one click away.
The keybindings mirror Omarchy — Super+Enter for terminal (Kitty replaces Console), Super+B for browser, Super+W closes windows, Super+2, 3, 4 to zip between workspaces. Windows tile automatically and snap back if you drag them. The active window lifts and highlights. No floating chaos.
Super+Space brings up the Omarchy-style menu — searchable, clean, everything from applications to firewall to power management. Some deeper panels still launch the old KDE parts because rewriting those is a mission, but that's the direction of travel.
OMARCHY THEMES WORK
This is the best bit. Type "theme" plus a Git URL and it clones and reskins the entire system with any Omarchy theme. Jobobo and Hardcore's collections all work — I install Lumon live in the video and the whole desktop recolours. Super+Ctrl+Space cycles wallpapers. Your Steam desktop, skinned like your Omarchy machine.
WHY I BUILT IT
I work on Omarchy every single day. Flipping to my Nvidia SteamOS games drive and landing in stock Plasma with floating windows does my head in. I spent years as an editor in Smoke, where every panel is locked off and you live in a focused little world — that's what tiling gives you, and it's what Plasma doesn't.
This isn't full ricing — it's the five percent of those crazy setups you actually want. If you're running SteamOS as a real operating system, especially now Nvidia opens it up to so many more of you, this makes the desktop side somewhere you'd actually choose to work. And when you want more, Omarchy is waiting. Consider this the gateway drug.
UPGRADING
If you've got version 1, do a fresh install — I've switched the window manager from Polonium to Karousel and I haven't tested upgrading over the top.
