In this episode of Linux for Creators, I revisit the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC 4K) and put it to work inside a Bazzite Linux creative setup. The BMPCC 4K has been around since 2018, but with recent firmware updates, support for ProRes RAW, and the flexibility of Linux-based tools like DaVinci Resolve, it’s still one of the most capable and affordable cinema cameras available in 2025.

Using Bazzite as my creator’s workstation, I show how the BMPCC 4K integrates seamlessly into a Linux workflow — from recording RAW footage to editing and grading in Resolve — while also exploring some of its underrated features like webcam functionality and vertical video support.

🔹 A Look Back at the BMPCC 4K

When the BMPCC 4K launched, it reset expectations for what an affordable cinema camera could deliver. For under £1,500 at release (and now closer to £1,000 second-hand), you got a cinema camera capable of recording in multiple professional codecs, including RAW. Pair it with Linux and Resolve, and you have a full-featured creative toolkit without paying Apple or Adobe subscriptions.

🔹 Key Features Still Relevant in 2025
• Records in three codecs, including BRAW and CinemaDNG RAW.
• Firmware update adds ProRes 422 HQ & Standard recording.
• Slow motion capture up to 120fps (windowed HD).
• USB-C webcam functionality for streaming or conferencing — simple and reliable.
• Vertical video support, with menus rotating automatically for Instagram, TikTok, or Shorts.
• Excellent touchscreen menu system that outshines most DSLRs.
• Mini XLR audio input and surprisingly usable internal microphones.
• Broad lens compatibility using Metabones and other adapters.

🔹 Why It Still Stands Out on Linux

On Bazzite Linux, I can edit BMPCC 4K footage in DaVinci Resolve 20.2 with full support for ProRes RAW, ProRes 422, and AV1. Linux Mint, Ubuntu Studio, and openSUSE can do this too with the right setup, but Bazzite’s streamlined environment makes it especially easy to get everything running smoothly.

For anyone building a Linux creator workstation, this combo — BMPCC 4K + Bazzite + Resolve — delivers pro-grade performance without the bloat of Windows or the expense of macOS.

🔹 The Trade-Offs
• No autofocus, unlike modern hybrid mirrorless cameras.
• Requires you to think more about focus pulling and post-production.
• But that’s exactly why it’s a learning tool for filmmakers — you’ll come out of the experience knowing how to light, shoot, and grade properly.

🔹 Why I Nearly Sold Mine (But Didn’t)

My BMPCC 4K was gathering dust, ready for eBay. But recent firmware updates (ProRes support) and rediscovering how good it is as a USB webcam convinced me to keep it. Combined with a Linux creative workflow on Bazzite, it’s still a powerhouse in 2025.

💡 Final Verdict

The BMPCC 4K remains an excellent choice in 2025 — especially if you’re working in Linux with Bazzite. For under £1,000, you get cinematic image quality, flexible codecs, excellent Resolve integration, and a camera that’s still supported years after release.

It might lack autofocus, but if you want to learn real filmmaking and color grading while keeping costs down, this is one of the best cameras you can buy — and it integrates perfectly with Linux creative tools.

📌 Who This Is For
• Linux creators wanting a cinema camera that integrates with Resolve.
• Filmmakers on a budget exploring second-hand cinema cameras.
• Content creators who want cinematic image quality on YouTube, Twitch, or Shorts.
• Blackmagic users who want a pro workflow outside of Windows/macOS.
