OmaRaw is out in beta — the first app in my Omarchy creative suite, built for people coming from Lightroom or Capture One who need professional-grade raw development on Omarchy without compromise. In this video I look at what we're leaving behind on Mac and Windows, install OmaRaw on Omarchy, and walk through the whole workflow: import, develop, tether, output.
Fair warning — it's beta. Don't trust your lifetime's collection to it yet. And I'm looking for bugs, not feature requests.

THE LOOK AT ADOBE AND CAPTURE ONE
I open both and walk through their panels — Capture One's linear library-tether-shape-style-adjust-retouch flow, and Lightroom's increasingly AI-heavy approach with generative removal and Firefly links. There's a tangent about camera companies that didn't survive autofocus or digital — Contax, Leica's struggles, Minolta — and why this moment feels similar for Adobe. I've spent a quarter of a million pounds on their subscriptions over my career. That world is going away.
THE IMPORT — WITH AI DOING THE BORING BIT
The worst part of photography is coming home with 500 photos to sort. OmaRaw installs a Claude skill, so I tell it to import 200 shots from Kew Gardens off my SD card, create a library, and tag them. There's a tiny built-in local tagging model (80 items, offline, rough) — but hand it to Claude and it renders previews, identifies everything including plant species from their labels, writes keywords, creates smart albums, and even guesses locations. Four minutes for 200 photos. Go make a cup of tea.
THE DEVELOP MODULE
Built in a strict pipeline order because that's how colour work should happen: prepare, lens and geometry, light and tone, colour and look, details, effects. Noise reduction first, sharpening last, grain over the top.
Highlights: AI noise reduction that generates a clean DNG like Lightroom does. AI object removal that creates its own layer so every later effect applies cleanly. Lens profiles with chromatic aberration and defringe. Crop and perspective with level-line tools. Full scopes — waveform, RGB parade, false colour with skin tone reference — because you get the image technically correct before you get creative. Lift, gamma, gain, offset primaries like a grading suite. Lab colour curves, which is my go-to for making an image pop without oversaturating. Black and white with proper film filter simulation. Film stock profiles reverse-engineered from spectral response charts. LUT support with tetrahedral interpolation. Halation, glow, vignette, and grain with mid-tone bias, because grain in shadows and grain in highlights behave differently.
Masking — AI object masks, pen tool, gradients, colour range, with feathering and edge refinement. Retouch — heal, clone, blur, fill. Sync a look across a whole shoot with one right-click.
TETHERING
Plug in your camera and shoot straight into the library with live view. Built on a module that supports over 2,000 cameras. The R5C exposes full control — colour space, output, destination. Your mileage will vary by body.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texture and clarity need optimisation, and colour range selection needs tightening — I'll fix those this week alongside your bug reports. Next up is OmaImage, the raster editor, built around GIMP's engine the same way OmaRaw is built on Darktable's — because I know their colour science works.
A note on hardware: this won't run on a potato. Big images need RAM, VRAM, and a fast SSD cache. That's not me, that's physics.
