The Omarchy over CachyOS hybrid build updated for 3.8. Same concept — CachyOS engine underneath, Omarchy 3.8 desktop on top — but with member feedback baked in, better mirror handling, and all the new 3.8 features landing cleanly on the CachyOS base.

If you've been following this series, you know the drill. One ISO, one install, encrypted drive, both repos updating side by side. This version is more stable than previous builds thanks to some really useful feedback from members, particularly Sibirinio who caught several issues I'd missed.

THE INSTALL

Boot from the ISO on Ventoy. CachyOS installer runs first — it finds your drive, wipes it, sets up encryption, pulls down Zen 4 optimised packages and GPU drivers. Use a wired connection for this. I cannot stress that enough — Wi-Fi will make your life miserable. The mirrors can be flaky and dropped packets during the download phase will stall the install.

After the CachyOS phase, pull the USB, reboot, and the Omarchy installer takes over. If you're on Wi-Fi you'll get a reconnect prompt — choose "continue anyway" if you're wired and enter your password.

First boot after install — reboot immediately. The sudo password doesn't get picked up on the first session. One reboot fixes it permanently. Same quirk as every previous version.

WHAT'S NEW

All the 3.8 features work on the hybrid — reminders, weather widget, default browser and terminal selection, custom ASCII screensaver, image and video transcoding from the file manager, foot terminal, the lot. The 3.7 gaming additions are there too — Steam, RetroArch, Heroic, Lutris, Moonlight, Xbox Cloud Gaming, all installable from the menu.

The firewall comes pre-configured correctly now — LocalSend on port 53317 and Docker exposed, matching the standard Omarchy defaults. Previous versions had this wrong.

UPDATES AND MIRRORS

Omarchy uses its own mirrors which can lag slightly behind CachyOS. If you get version mismatch warnings during updates, switch the CachyOS channel to Edge in the settings. That keeps both sides in sync.

Kernel 7 is default. Hyprland is moving to Lua for configuration which opens up interesting modification possibilities down the line.

WHY BOTHER

Omarchy on its own is brilliant — 3.8 is the best it's ever been. The hybrid exists for people who want CachyOS's optimised kernel, CPU-specific binaries, and package tweaks running underneath. Is the difference measurable in daily use? Probably not for most people. But if you like tinkering and you want the theoretical best of both worlds, this is it.
