The Omarchy over CachyOS hybrid is back with version 5. CachyOS changed their installer, mirrors moved, things broke — so I rewrote chunks of the 130,000 character script to get it working again. If you tried an earlier version and hit problems, this should sort you out.

However there is a ton of free stuff here

Same concept as always — CachyOS engine underneath, Omarchy desktop on top. One ISO, one install, encrypted drive, both sets of repos updating cleanly side by side.

THE INSTALL

Boot from the ISO, it runs the CachyOS installer first. It detects your hardware, pulls Zen 4 optimised packages for your CPU, installs GPU drivers via CachyOS's CHWD detection, sets up disk encryption, and gets the base system down. Pull the USB, reboot, and the Omarchy installer takes over — lays the desktop, themes, and configuration on top.

There's a Wi-Fi prompt on the Omarchy phase. If you're already on a wired connection, just hit "continue anyway" and type your password.

First boot after install — reboot immediately. There's a quirk where Walker doesn't pick up the password on the very first session. One reboot fixes it permanently.

WHAT'S FIXED IN V5

CachyOS changed where their mirrors are listed in the installer — moved everything to a new format and the old locations came back empty. The script now handles that. Mirror failures during install have better retry logic with three or four attempts before it gives up, and if the install fails it now cleans the drive properly instead of leaving half-installed remnants.

There's a double password prompt bug I still need to track down — it asks twice but you only need to type it once. Cosmetic, doesn't break anything.

THE REPO SITUATION

This is the important bit. You've got CachyOS repos and Omarchy repos running together. CachyOS's default stable channel holds packages back about a month. Omarchy's repos are more current. This creates version mismatches.

My recommendation — go into the update settings and switch the CachyOS channel from Stable to Edge. That gives you the latest packages from both sides and keeps everything in sync. The options are Stable, Release Candidate, Edge, and Dev. Edge is the sweet spot.

KERNEL MANAGER AND GAMESCOPE

The custom kernel manager and CachyOS-specific Gamescope launcher are bundled with this build. Do not run these on standard Omarchy or standard CachyOS — they're built specifically for this hybrid configuration.

KEEP YOUR ISO

Once you've got a working ISO, save it. If CachyOS changes their installer again, the build script might fail to create a new ISO. But an existing ISO will continue to install and update just fine.
