In this Linux Out of the Box episode, I explore Omachy OS — a bold new Arch-based Linux distribution built around the Hyprland window manager. Designed by David Heinemeier Hansson (creator of Ruby on Rails), Omachy OS rethinks the way we interact with our computers.

Instead of relying on floating windows, endless menus, and the mouse-first approach of Windows and macOS, Omachy puts the keyboard at the center of everything. With Super key shortcuts and tiling window management, it delivers a workflow that is fast, minimal, and refreshingly different.

🔹 Why Omachy OS Stands Out
• Arch-based, Hyperland-driven – lightweight, modern, and customizable.
• Keyboard-first workflow – hotkeys and Super key shortcuts make multitasking faster.
• Tiling window management – no floating chaos, everything is neatly organized.
• Full-disk encryption during install for security.
• Pre-installed creative tools like LibreOffice, Kdenlive, and OBS Studio.
• Gaming support with Steam and Proton available from the installer.
• AI-ready – LM Studio, Ollama, and other AI tools can be added easily.

🔹 What’s Covered in This Video
• Fresh install of Omachy OS (note: doesn’t work with Ventoy, needs a dedicated USB).
• Hardware used: Ryzen 9 CPU, NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti, 32GB RAM.
• First impressions of the minimal, clean desktop.
• Exploring built-in apps like LibreOffice and Kdenlive.
• Installing and running OBS Studio with AV1 encoding on NVIDIA GPUs.
• Installing Steam and running Dredge to test gaming performance.
• Using workspaces instead of minimize to switch tasks quickly.
• Theme customization and aesthetics — lightweight, modern, and stylish.
• Keyboard workflow demo with Super key shortcuts.
• Why this OS feels exciting and different compared to Bazzite, Fedora, or Ubuntu.

🔹 Who This Is For
• Linux users tired of the same old desktop paradigms.
• Creators who want a fast, distraction-free environment.
• Gamers interested in Arch-based systems with Proton support.
• Developers who like tiling window managers but want polish.
• Anyone curious about Hyprland and modern Linux workflows.

💡 My Take

Omachy OS is one of the most exciting Linux distros I’ve tried in years. It challenges how we think about computing by removing clutter and focusing on efficiency. It might feel like a leap at first, but with great documentation, pre-installed creative tools, and a vibrant Arch base, it’s worth trying.

I’ll also be making a follow-up video on installing DaVinci Resolve on Omachy with my custom script, showing how this OS can serve as a serious creator’s workstation.
